Solid wood flooring is one of the most durable and long-lasting flooring types, but over time it can become scratched, uneven, or worn. Our solid wood floor sanding service in Barnet restores the surface back to clean, smooth, natural timber and gives your floor a brand-new appearance.
Solid wood floors are made from single pieces of natural timber, which means they can be sanded many times throughout their lifespan. Whether your floor has dents, stains, heavy wear, or an old finish that has faded, sanding is the most effective way to restore its beauty and strength.
We begin by inspecting your floor for loose boards, gaps, cupping, cracked boards, or structural issues. This allows us to identify any repairs needed before sanding begins.
Solid wood floors are thicker than engineered floors, so they can handle deeper sanding when required. We use high-grade, dust-controlled sanding machines to remove old coatings, scratches, stains, and imperfections. This step exposes fresh natural timber and creates a perfectly level surface.
After the main sanding passes, we complete multiple finer sanding stages to achieve a silky-smooth finish. This ensures the wood is perfectly prepared to accept oil, lacquer, or stain without marks or inconsistencies.
All dust is removed carefully from the floor, corners, edges, and surrounding areas. A clean surface is essential for a professional finish and ensures the sealant bonds evenly.
After sanding, you can choose the finish that best suits your home or business:

How thick does my solid wood floor need to be for sanding?
Generally, your solid wood floor should be at least 15–20mm thick to be safely sanded multiple times. We always assess the floor first to check for sufficient depth and avoid any risk of over-sanding.
Can I sand and refinish a 100-year-old pine floor?
Yes — in many cases, old pine floors can be beautifully restored. As long as the boards are stable and thick enough, we can sand them safely and apply a protective finish suited to historic wood.
Should I fill gaps in my Victorian floorboards before or after sanding?
We usually fill gaps after the first sanding pass. This ensures the filler bonds well and blends with the floor’s natural colour and grain. In some cases, wooden slivers are used for wider gaps.
How do I prevent the floorboards from looking orange after sanding?
We use finishes designed to neutralise the natural warmth of pine and oak. Water-based lacquers and “invisible” oils help retain a lighter, more natural tone and prevent the orange or yellowing effect.
What's the best finish for solid oak flooring after sanding?
It depends on the look and durability you want. For a natural matte look, hardwax oils or invisible lacquers work best. For higher traffic areas, polyurethane lacquer provides extra protection.
